About the band

The Redstone Community Big Band is a group of like-minded, amateur musicians of all ages, who get together once a week to play arrangements of classic big band jazz, swing, latin and contemporary music.

The band is directed with great enthusiasm and expertise by Graham Russell, a professional musician with more than 40years experience and a particular passion for the big band genre.

The band performs regular public concerts throughout the year, raising money for our nominated local charities, as well as occasional private bookings: local shows, wedding anniversaries etc. See our Concert & Events Listing for details.

Image of Graham Russell

Musical Director

Graham Russell is an outstanding trumpeter who has worked with artists as diverse as Mike Westbrook, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was lead trumpet for many years in the musical Starlight Express.

Graham began directing the Redstone big band in 2015 and his energy, enthusiasm and deep knowledge of big band jazz helps Redstone improve year-on-year.

Very much still a working musician, as well as directing the Redstone big band on Saturday mornings, Graham can be heard performing with his own sextet, the Vince Dunn Orchestra and many others!

Joining the band

Redstone is a community big band and as such we are open to anyone who plays a traditional big band instrument (sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, keys & drums) and can read music at about grade 5 level, or above. No previous jazz experience is necessary and there are no auditions.

However, whilst we don't limit our sections to traditional big band numbers (we currently have 10 alto sax players for example!), we are constrained by our rehearsal space and concert logistics.

Email us with your details (instrument/experience etc.) to enquiries@redstonebigband.com and we'll let you know whether we currently have places available. If we can't offer you a place immediately then you may be able to 'dep' at rehearsals, or just come along and watch.
